UKOUG Techfest19

I’ve just returned from Techfest19 – the UKOUG Flagship Oracle Tech conference – and it was simply excellent.

Amazing Sunset from the Grand

It was held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton, and it was grand. If you missed it, you really missed out. 250 mostly amazing  presentations.

I did 2 main ones about Oracle Statistics, and also MC’d the Jonathan Lewis Optimizer Panel, alongside Martin Widlake. The highlight of my conference was asking a left-field question of an Oracle Architect about Full Table Scans, which has resulted in the potential for a change to the code to make them (possibly slightly) more efficient. Thank you for listening Roger!

Oracle ACE Dinner

If you missed my 2 sessions on Database Statistics, you can find a webinar and a Blair-Witch style video of each of them here on my website:

UKOUG Guest Speaker, before the party

Oracle ACE Director

I was at UKOUG Tech17 this week in my capacity at both Speaker and Tech Lead (organizing and selecting the agenda, drinks, parties, etc – although the heavy lifting is done by the @UKOUG office)

There was rather a nice surprise waiting for me. Jennifer from the Oracle ACE Program upgraded my Oracle ACE to Oracle ACE Director.

This is a wonderful honour and reflects the many many days dedicated each year to the Oracle community through presenting at conferences around the world, helping on forums, writing magazine articles, arranging SIG’s and meetups, as well as the aforementioned Tech Lead at #UKOUG_TECH17

Thank you Oracle ACE Program!

As for Tech17? Here’s a few images of this year’s event!

Oracle ACE Award

I have just learned that I have been nominated and accepted as an Oracle ACE. I would like to thank Jonathan Lewis for the nomination and Oracle Corp. for the recognition.

It’s a tremendous honour for me to receive this award. I just hope I can live up to it by continuing to serve the community, write some more blog posts (here) that people find useful, keep organising the UKOUG RAC, Cloud, Availability and Infrastructure SIG and keep helping with UKOUG Tech 15. Keep going to the London Oracle Beer [no link, just beer] and #ClubOracle and keep promoting the Oracle community.

I’d also like to thank Martin Widlake for persuading me to get up on stage a few years ago and start giving presentations too. I think your beer debt is finally paid 🙂

Finally, I’d like to thank my wife and children for putting up with me sitting in my office at home, working on those presentations for hours and letting me enjoy myself off at conferences, SIGs and all the other events I attend when I could be spending time with them. I hope I get the work/life/community balance right.

Whilst all of that community stuff takes time and some effort, it’s rewarding and fulfilling, and remarkably social. Why don’t you try some or all of the above. I’m happy to help you get started. I’m short a talk on the next RAC SIG in July… fancy filling in? Send me an email. Lets talk.
